Welcome to NewRiver Portuguese Water Dogs

Gibson91.jpg

Located in rural Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada, we are dedicated preservation breeders of Portuguese Water Dogs, committed to producing exceptional companions with the health, temperament, and working drive that define this wonderful breed. Our dogs come from champion bloodlines and are fully health tested. We build upon the foundation laid by dedicated breeders who have worked tirelessly to preserve and improve the PWD.

Our puppies are raised in our home from day one, in a specially designed "puppy room." We utilize Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) exercises from days 3-16 to give them a strong developmental start. As they grow, we introduce them to a variety of sights, sounds, and experiences to ensure they develop into confident and well-adjusted dogs. We pour our hearts into raising happy, healthy, and curious puppies.

All our puppies are CKC registered, health checked, microchipped, and receive their first vaccinations before joining their forever families.

At NewRiver PWDs, you're not just getting a dog – you're welcoming a loyal, loving, and adventurous member into your family.

Adoption

The journey to welcoming a NewRiver Portuguese Water Dog puppy into your home begins with completing our detailed application. Once we receive your application, we'll review it carefully and contact you for a phone conversation to discuss your application, lifestyle, and expectations, ensuring a good match for both you and the puppy. After a successful phone call, a deposit will be required to secure your place in line for one of our adorable PWDs and allows us to finalize the adoption process, preparing your new furry friend for their forever home.

Given the current border restrictions, we can only adopt to families in Canada at this time.

About the Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese Water Dog (PWD) boasts a rich history as a working dog and a cherished companion to fishermen. These dogs lived and worked alongside their crews on fishing boats, performing vital tasks such as herding fish into nets, retrieving broken nets, and even delivering messages between boats and shore. Their water-resistant coats and webbed feet made them perfectly suited for these maritime duties. Fishermen highly valued the PWD's loyal and devoted nature.

Known for their bright and biddable temperament, PWDs are intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train.

Appearance & Grooming:

Portuguese Water Dogs come in a variety of coat colors, including black, brown, white, brown and white, and black and white. Their coats can be either curly or wavy and are considered non-shedding, requiring regular grooming (daily or every other day). While often referred to as "hypoallergenic," it's important to understand that individual reactions can still occur. If you or your family members have allergies, we strongly recommend spending time with the breed to ensure it's a good fit.

Temperament & Exercise:

PWDs are energetic and intelligent dogs that thrive on both physical and mental stimulation. They excel in various dog sports like agility, rally, obedience, and water work. Daily exercise is a must for this breed. PWDs are deeply devoted to their families and should not be left alone for extended periods.
